A true bit of history from the vaults of Emerson Independent Video.
What you are about to witness is the final show in the EIV Sports anchoring career of the one and only Smokin' Joe Nordstrom. He graced the EIV airwaves for but one season - a brief shining moment in the sun - before disappearing forever from the Emerson scene. But his finest hour is preserved for eternity here, originally on VHS in glitchy EP recording mode, and now in YouTube's compressed digital glory.
This was the final EIV News taping of the 1995-96 school year, on Tuesday, April 23, 1996. As you can see, we were all having a lot of fun goofing around with it (we knew that nobody would be watching it anyway, since the semester was over). Joe was one of the star sports anchors, a freshman upstart with an ESPN sensibility. But he also knew how to party, and we decided to pull the rug out from under him on his final broadcast. Exit Smokin' Joe... enter the incomparable Scotty Isaacson, the world's most enthusiastic Dan Patrick wannabe, finally getting his shot at the anchor desk.
So many things to like about this clip:
- Melinda Valente and Vidya Iyer doubling up for the Entertainment segment with one of the most horrifyingly computer-generated backgrounds ever seen on video.
- Joe's live tease from the 130 Beacon alley recycling bin, complete with camera connection issues due to a faulty connection.
- Chad Murphy playing "Pop-Up Video" behind Joe's final "Well folks..." intro.
- Joe's Hand-Me-Down Night dance moves captured on 3/4" video tape for all to enjoy.
- Jay Beck's direction over the studio talk-back mic, chastising Joe for his constant screw-ups (which were caused by intentionally rolling clips early to throw him off... and actually, he did a good job keeping things rolling).
- The very real look of utter confusion on Joe's face when he realizes that he's getting pulled from the anchor desk.
And perhaps my favorite subtle bit of it all - the fact that, despite having no idea that he'd be pulled away from the desk live on-camera, Joe completed the wacky sports-anchor stereotype by wearing shorts with his suit jacket and tie.
Sadly, this was one of the final times the world got to see Smokin' Joe, as not long thereafter he was tragically killed in a blimp accident over the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. Goodyear? The worst.
Here's to you, Smokin' Joe, wherever you are...
