Charles Edward "Charlie" Daniels (born October 28, 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina) is an American musician famous for his contributions to Country, Southern Rock, and Jazz music. Daniels, a talented singer, guitarist, and fiddler, began writing and performing in the 1950s. In 1964, Daniels co-wrote "It Hurts Me", a song which Elvis Presley recorded. He worked as a Nashville session musician, often for producer Bob Johnston, including playing on three Bob Dylan albums during 1969 and 1970, and recordings by Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen. Daniels recorded his first solo album, Charlie Daniels, in 1971 (see 1971 in country music). His first hit, the novelty song "Uneasy Rider", was from his 1972 second album, Honey in the Rock, and reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1974, Daniels organized the first in a series of Volunteer Jam concerts based in or around Nashville, Tennessee. Except for a three-year gap in the late 1980s, these jams have continued ever since. In 1975, he had a top 30 hit as leader of the Charlie Daniels Band with the Southern Rock self-identification anthem "The South's Gonna Do It Again". "Long Haired Country Boy" was also a minor hit in that year. Daniels won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1979 for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", which reached #3 on the charts. Subsequent Daniels pop hits included "In America" (#11 in 1980), "The Legend of Wooley Swamp" (#31 in 1980), and "Still in Saigon" (#22 in 1982). In the late 1980s and 1990s, several of Daniels' albums and singles were hits on the Country charts. Daniels also released several Gospel and Christian records. Daniels has never shied away from politics. "The South's Gonna Do It" had a mild message of Southern cultural identity within the Southern rock movement. Daniels was an early supporter of Jimmy Carter's presidential bid and performed at his January 1977 inauguration. "In America" was a reaction to the 1979-1981 Iran Hostage Crisis; it described a patriotic, united America where "we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank / That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks." In contrast, "Still in Saigon" (written by Dan Daley) was an effective portrayal of the plight of the American Vietnam veteran ten years after the war; it was part of an early 1980s wave of attention to the subject, in contrast to treatments such as Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." and "Shut Out the Light", Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon", and somewhat later Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road". In 1990, Daniels' country hit "Simple Man" seemingly advocated a pseudo-Biblical form of vigilantism; lines such as "Just take them [rapists, killers, child abusers] out in the swamp / Put 'em on their knees and tie 'em to a stump / Let the rattlers and the bugs and the alligators do the rest," got Daniels considerable media attention and talk show visits. In 2003, Daniels published an Open Letter to the Hollywood Bunch in defense of George W. Bush's Iraq policy. His 2003 book Ain't No Rag: Freedom, Family, and the Flag contains this letter as well as many other personal statements. During the 2004 presidential campaign, Daniels said that having never served in the military himself, he did not have the right to criticize John Kerry's service record. [1] Daniels now resides in Mount Juliet, TN, where the city has named a park after him. Daniels is a born again Christian. In 2005, he has made a cameo appearance along with Larry the Cable Guy, Kid Rock, and Hank Williams, Jr. in Gretchen Wilson's music video for the song "All Jacked Up". "Under Pressure" is a 1981 song by Queen and David Bowie. It marked Queen's first released collaboration with another recording artist, and is featured on their 1982 album Hot Space. The song was a hit at the time, reaching #1 in the UK singles chart. The song evolved from a jam session the band had with Bowie at its studio in Montreux, Switzerland, therefore it was credited as co-written by the five musicians. According to Queen bassist John Deacon (as quoted in a French magazine in 1984), however, the song's primary musical songwriter was Freddie Mercury — though all contributed to the arrangement. An earlier, embryonic version of the song without Bowie called "Feel Like" is widely available in bootleg form. Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have credited the bass riff to Deacon; Bowie also said on his website that the bassline was already written before he became involved. Bowie had originally come to the studios in order to sing backing vocals in another Queen song, "Cool Cat," which would end up being edited out since he wasn't satisfied with them. Once he got there, they jammed for a while and wrote the song. Very nice song sung by the great Freddie Mercury and nicely played by Queen. [Mas+detalle]

Allen Iverson has scored 87 points and dished out 22 assists in the two games since he was snubbed for the United States' national team. Coincidence? Iverson says yes. Iverson had 47 points and 12 assists to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 119-113 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday night. It's the first time Iverson has reached 40 points and 10 assists in consecutive games. He had 40 points and 10 assists against the Rockets on Wednesday night. The victory was the Sixers' fifth in six games since the All-Star break. "I promise you it's not that," Iverson said, while continuing to maintain he wasn't bothered by not being invited to play. "If I can play the way I played the last two games from some controversy, I will hope there's controversy going on all of the time." Gilbert Arenas scored 17 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, including five straight to bring Washington within 114-113 with 1:30 remaining. But his driving layup spilled out with the Sixers up three and 50 seconds to go, and the Wizards wouldn't score again. Chris Webber, who added 30 points and 12 rebounds, sealed the win with a three-point play with 14.5 seconds left. The 77 points are the most Iverson and Webber have combined for since the latter was acquired in a trade deadline deal in February of last year. "We've been talking about this for a year-and-a-half, so we're glad that this is coming," Webber said. "We really like playing together, and we're getting it going. We're really just trying to lead this team to where we know we can be." Antawn Jamison had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost three in a row. While Arenas used his initial All-Star snub as motivation for a strong second half of the season, Iverson says he needs no such motivation. "I felt good out there," Iverson said. "My shot felt good from the beginning of the game to the end. When guys were helping on me, my teammates were getting open ... and they were hitting shots." Said coach Maurice Cheeks: "Phenomenal is the word." Caron Butler, who had been battling stomach problems, had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, but left the game with 32 seconds to play after suffering an injury to his right ankle in a scramble for a loose ball. Washington held a 14-5 edge in offensive rebounds, which led to 21 second-chance points, through the first three quarters to keep the game close despite 59 percent shooting from the Sixers. After Iverson crossed over Antonio Daniels and got a layup that gave them a 95-90 lead, Arenas responded with a dunk, free throw and a 3-pointer to give the Wizards their first lead since the second quarter, 96-95. Iverson responded with seven straight Sixers' points to give them a five-point lead. A jumper by Webber put the Sixers up 110-102 with 4:30 left. "We played very hard, especially in the second half," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "I thought we waited a little too long to play at a high level, energy-wise. Allen is playing at a high level we really couldn't contain him tonight." [Mas+detalle]
