Indian-Malaysian rapper Yogi B and Tamil rap group Natchatra, Feat. Lock Up Guna bust it out in a remix of Illayaraja's music (from the film Nizahalgal) "Madai Thiranthu". Song is from their album Vallavan. A fanastic debut song that's worth all the publicity it's getting. You gotta hand it to the Malaysian Desi diaspora. They put us US-desis to shame by the amount of raw, per-capita music talent. Great song and great vid. Keep it bumpin from across the pond my Malaysio(?)-Indian cousins! This was the opening video for our Student Fall Retreat called "You've Got Talent." Everyone is asking what inspired this. Here is goes... 1) We needed a great opening video that caught everyone off guard, and set the the tone for the weekend. 2) With this idea in mind, we thought we could use this video as a great object lesson about media choices (kinda creepy hearing your grandparents sing some of this), and 3) this has been a GREAT transgenerational culture experiment. One of the best socially conscious rap songs of the old school hip-hop. Groups like Public Enemy and KRS One emerged later in the '80s with rap songs that usually had a political message of some kind. Chuck D of Public Enemy even called rap "The black CNN" for its ability to reach a young black audience.
