Google Tech Talks July, 10 2008 ABSTRACT "One number, one painting - the number is the art is the limit is the price." Onethousandpaintings.com is a truly global art project that has received worldwide media coverage (BBC, Wired, BoingBoing, and many others). On May 30th and 31st 2006 alone, 322 paintings were sold - most likely the highest number of unique, handmade paintings sold on the internet within such a short time. Since then, close to 800 paintings have been shipped to 26 countries. In his talk, Marcel Salath, the creator of One Thousand Paintings, will tell the story behind the project that started as a thought experiment in the heart of Europe, and took him on a trip around the world, eventually bringing him to Mountain View. He'll talk about how the project started, the personal stories behind each number, developing a secondary re-sale market, and many other aspects at this intersection of art, technology, and marketing. The DVD was recorded November 2006 at London's recently restored Roundhouse, and is a visual feast featuring circus acts, gymnasts and cabaret dancers as well as the Dolls themselves, who create a set pulling from both records, as well as previously unreleased material. The plan to photograph the plans for the German invasion of Great Britain goes bad, as ususal, when Edith puts the smoke bomb in the wrong chimney of the château, and René and LeClerc are forced to blow up the safe in another kind of chaos than they had originally planned. When the smoke clears they discover that Lieutenant Gruber had in his safe not the invasion plans, but the original paintings by Van Clomp and Van Gogh. During the escape, René and LeClerc are captured by the Communist Résistance, in German uniforms, and it is unclear which is worst - saying that they´re Germans, or revealing their true identities, which are seen as German collaborators. Helga is ordered by the Colonel to be Lieutenant Gruber´s best friend, but during their not-so-romantic tête-à-tête, Edith and the servant girls steal the Lieutenant´s little tank to try and rescue René. William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 August 19, 1905) was a French academic painter. Bouguereau was a staunch traditionalist whose realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of Classical subjects with a heavy emphasis on the female human body. Although he created an idealized world, his almost photo-realistic style was popular with rich art patrons.
