Here's a better setup for my video glasses. I then use them to play one of my favorite songs in Rock Band 2: Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups. Kinda mellow, but I like it. Also the title is fitting for this video about perscription lenses. :) Oh, one more thing. I'm sorry I haven't been making as many videos lately. I have a new addiction that has consumed all of my free time since I finally tried it a month ago: World of Warcraft. Thanks for watching! FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? People wanted to see more about the video glasses and my V-Drums setup. Also, I'm going to try to do some of my favorite songs from Rock Band 2 on the V-Drums in upcoming videos. Here's one of them. Chop Suey by System of a Down. Thanks for stopping by! EDIT: The video glasses are the Myvu Crystal. Amazon sells them. They're around $300. EDIT 2: BTW, I'm not "rich", I have just been out of college and working since the late '90s :) EDIT 3: See this for better lens clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWttxlJMafM FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? It's novel time... It's been requested a few times that I hook up my MIDI Hero mod to my Roland V-Drums. I had resisted in the past because I wanted to play on a "legit" setup so that I could post on Score Hero. My drumKat setup is legit because it's "4 pads and a single bass drum". I will not be posting any scores I get playing on the V-Drums setup, even though it's actually harder this way, a LOT harder. So, I've got my mod hooked up to my "real drums" for this one. And it's a lot of fun. I have much more freedom to place the colors where they ought to be. For example, Blue is sometimes used for a tom-tom, and sometimes for a crash, ride, bell, etc. Now I can play Blue notes on the appropriate drum or cymbal. This song (Panic Attack by Dream Theater) demonstrates the different kinds of Blue and I try to play it as authentically as possible. I show the color mapping at the end of the video (which I leave up for a long time so you don't have to pause :). Not only that, I can now mix the sound of "real drums" over top of the Rock Band audio track. I can hear it when I play, and I record it separately so that I can mix it into my videos, like this one. It makes for better sounding fills since I can get all the dynamics and timing out of the V-Drums drums that I don't have with the RB1 drum controller that my mod is simulating. I turned the "Instruments" setting all the way down so you can't hear the in-game drums conflicting with my V-Drum sounds as much. What's interesting about this is that now you can hear what it sounds like to play the charted drum parts in Rock Band on a real drum set. If I were to play these songs on real drums without the game keeping track of all my hits and misses, I would surely play other things, different fills, ghost notes, improv, etc. But from what I've found, the drum charts in Rock Band are pretty good! If you play them as written, on the right drums and cymbals, with proper dynamics, it sounds (almost) like the original drum part! (Of course, overlooking any double bass parts). So to those of you who are wondering if you're actually "learning drums" by playing Rock Band -- I believe that you are. I also got a new toy: video glasses. So I don't have to hook up a monitor to my V-Drums to see the game as I play it. I just connect the 640x480 composite video signal from the Xbox 360 to these glasses (search "Myvu Crystal" on Amazon.com) and I can see it right in front of my eyes! What a geek! I can also see peripherally so I'm able to hit the drums I want. It's similar to how you play normally, because you're mostly watching the screen and your arms have the general feeling of where the drums are without specifically looking at them. But it's really weird using these things, because... 1) My eyesight sucks. They are calibrated so that people with normal vision can use them. They make it seem like you're watching about a 24" TV screen at arm's length from your face. Pretty big. But I can't see clearly at that distance. So I have to wear perscription glasses. And I hate wearing contacts. So I used pro-grade, ultra modern and cool looking twist ties to attach the video glasses a spare set of perscription glasses I have. Can you say NERD? 2) When you're playing a rhythm game where you have to move around a bit (like drums on Rock Band), you're used to focusing on a stationary TV screen. All slight movements made by your head, your eyes are used to making the reverse adjustment to stay focused on the notes coming down. Now, when I move my head, my TV moves with me! So it's very strange when I move my head, that I have to keep my eyes always looking straight ahead. And it shakes a lot when you swing your arms around to hit drums. So it's a bit difficult to concentrate on the notes coming down the chart. Reasons why I don't (yet) score very well using the V-Drums: 1) The video glasses reasons above. 2) Having to remember which colors map to which drums. 3) The feeling of playing "real drums" causes me to start improvising subconciously and lose my multiplier. 4) With the "Instruments" audio setting turned all the way down, you can't hear the drum track in the game, so it's hard to hear exactly where the beat is at times. 5) I didn't practice this song long enough to be able to pwn it, and I was just too psyched about everything not to post a video. :) But I think I can get used to all of these things and get my scores back up, even playing on "real drums". My high score on this is 340k, played on my drumKat setup. And that was days ago. I'm sure I could gold star it on my next attempt. And even after lots more practice since then, the best I can do on "real drums" is currently around 250k. It's a lot harder and takes a lot more energy to play. I hope you like the video. I love this song. Thanks for checking this out! [Mas+detalle]

This was one of the top most requested songs for me to play from Rock Band. But I don't really take this song seriously because: a) A cover band played it. b) They don't know how to keep time. c) All the slight charted tempo changes are annoying. To gold star it, it comes down to keeping time with an "out of time" chart, and it's not fun to play. I further mock the song by playing it with paradiddles instead of the authentic single stroke pattern that you'd use if you were really playing this song on a drum set. Don't get me wrong, I love Iron Maiden. Between Iron Maiden and Rush, they were my top two favorite bands in my early drum playing days. Flight of Icarus was the first song I ever heard where I went "wow, I like music", even before playing drums. I remember seeing the video on MTV (yeah, MTV used to play Iron Maiden videos, can you believe it?) But for the reasons I mentioned above, I didn't bother practicing for more than a 1/2 hour before giving up and just having a go at it for a vid. The video wouldn't have been much different looking if I had gold star'd it, so hopefully if you requested this, I didn't disappoint! Thanks.. for.. WASH.. ing! ;-) p.s. In case you're wondering, there was "activity" going on outside the window during the intro. I wasn't trying to smile at the camera or anything lol. ***ANNOUNCEMENT: STARTING TONIGHT (1-Nov-2008) and for the next week or so, between 9:00-ish and midnight-ish Eastern (GMT-5) nightly, there will be a 79% chance that I'll be playing the solo tour on Rock Band 2 and streaming it. It'll all be sightreads, and maybe practice a few sections if something is really tough. But for the most part, it'll just be me playing the game as I normally would by my lonesome. Solo drums tour first, then probably solo guitar tour. I don't know how entertaining that'll be, but feel free to tune in on my ustream.tv channel. As long as there are a few out there that seem to want to watch, I'll keep trying to stream it every night. Maybe I can duel/co-op people on my XBL friends list too. I probably won't be making any youtube videos during this time. It'll be unlikely that I'll play any song well enough to warrant capturing the Ustream either. But if I come across a cool song, I'll jot it down for perfecting for a later "high quality" video. So, I'll see you if I see you! Otherwise, I'm just looking forward to playing a new game. "Hello Everybody! I just wanted to say thanks to my subscribers. This video is dedicated to Mushy2000 who was my very first subscriber. Thanks for watching!" I only missed one note but I over strummed before a fill section. Does that mean I got a "-1" or is it considered a "-2"? I think it's a -1 because "I hit every note except one". I just lost combo in another spot. UPDATE: people are confirming, it's -1 with 1 overhit. As of 31-Oct-2008, this is the #1 score for this song played on RB1. If you beat it, post a video response! Sooo close to Gold but no cigar. I'm sure that with one more night of practice I could get it. I'm less than 10k away, probably more like 5k away judging by IBitePrettyHard's 140k gold star RB2 run on scorehero. But I'm kinda pissed that after 20 takes I couldn't quite get there. I did get #1 on the RB1 leaderboards, though, as of 30-Oct-2008. If anybody beats me on this song (playing RB1) you can post a video response. This was my 10th and best take. By the time I was on my 20th take, I was hitting all the parts I missed in my 10th take, but couldn't hit the parts I HIT in the 10th take. Sheesh. I got tired and frustrated so I quit. I hate waiting for that intro to finish, too. 20 times waiting for that is enough. Wow, I sound so negative. Sorry. I like this run well enough. I was noodling around in the beginning which is something I normally don't do, so I hope that's not too annoying. I'll be wrapping up my Moving Pictures album DLC videos next with Vital Signs! No Gold Stars this time, no #1 spot on the RB1 leaderboards. Another night practicing this song and I would've gotten gold but it's just so long and I've had enough of it. It's not one of my favorite songs on the album. I warmed up to it a little as I practiced it, but still... I was in a goofy mood and was playing drum beats with my head as I waited for the long intro to finish before the drum part kicked in, but I didn't fully realize it'd look so stupid so I cut all that out. There are some good moments in this run. I did pretty well on the intro and I hit some of Neil's fills, but missed others pretty badly. Still, it's my current top score. I think it's about 25k away from gold stars, though. I hope you like the video. Witch Hunt is next. Thanks for subscribing! FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? I can't not make a mistake. I played this over and over and this one contained the least amount of mistakes (-1 before the end fills, and it was an OD note! ouch!) This run was enough to get me to #1 on the leaderboards as of 28-Oct-2008 for this song (the "Original Version" DLC, on RB1 not RB2), but only by a thin 1k margin. Sorry I keep saying "I made #1" on all my latest videos, but I'm usually not #1 in anything so I'll take what I can get ;) I'm a little bummed that I didn't nail the ending fills this time, but I hit most of it :) and I like how the drum pad noises sound over the audio track at that part. I had a couple of smoother runs, but this is my best score so I'll post it. This particular song was one of the main reasons I started playing drums at age 15. As of 26-Oct-2008 this is the #1 score on the RB1 leaderboards. If anyone beats me (in RB1), I'll let you post a video response. Do you know what YYZ means? Funny story, when I was in 10th grade I had to write a book report. I procrastinated as usual. The night before it was due I pulled out my Moving Pictures vinyl album, looked through Neil Peart's lyrics, saw Red Barchetta, decided to write my "book" report on that. I figured my teacher wouldn't be cool enough to have ever listened to Rush so it was a pretty safe bet that he had never heard of this song and wouldn't discover I didn't actually "read a book" for my report. I remember writing some stupid thing, even referencing the "gleaming alloy air car". "The Red Barchetta, by Neil Peart" was the title I gave it. I think I got a B. So about this run... as of 24-Oct-2008, this is the #1 score for this song in Rock Band (not Rock Band 2). I show the leaderboard at the end, and also the leaderboard for my last video of Tom Sawyer (Original Version). I know people are playing RB2 now so it's easier to get 1st place on new DLC. I'll move on to RB2 after I finish the Moving Pictures Album (oh, and RTTH). (UPDATE 26-Oct-2008: destroy888 (DonkeyDood15 on the leaderboards) just beat my score! See video response.) As of 21-Oct-2008, this is the #1 score on the in-game leaderboards and on score hero (before you question this, remember this is RB1 not RB2, and this is the "original version" not the cover). So, my first #1! I got excited for like 5 minutes, then I realized that hardly anybody plays this version because the non-Original Version ships with the game and also people have moved on to RB2. But oh well, I'll take it! :-) (UPDATE: if anyone beats me playing the "original version" on RB1, I'll let you post a video response). I screw up in places I shouldn't have, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. It's a gold star run and I'm happy with that. I'm going to try to get through each song on the Moving Pictures DLC then maybe I'll stream RB2 setlist sightreads. If that doesn't sound interesting, let me know and I won't bother streaming that. Yeah, I was silly to think I could gold star every song in Rock Band. I'm not a double bass drummer, and this run proves it. Watch and laugh as I struggle! I'm VERY happy with the 5-star on this one. I know some people play with both feet on one pedal, but I feel like since the original drummer was playing double the hits that are charted, I should use one foot to play what his right foot plays on the song. Also, I have a cold and have been in my PJs for days, sorry you had to see that. Next up, I plan to run through all of the Moving Pictures Album DLC. That album is one of the key reasons I took up drumming in the first place when I was 15. I hope you guys like Rush! Thanks to TheProven for the idea to mute the drum tap sounds during fills. Great song. Still getting used to playing "laggy fills". They'll get better over time. I've reduced the lag in my setup by 40ms from my last Rock Band Drums video and it really helped. It was way more fun compared to my last video that had lame fills. I had one really stupid mistake coming out of a fill in the bridge/mid section, but other than that, a pretty good run for me. Good enough for 24th on the in-game leaderboard, and 9th on Score Hero (but I still don't upload there, never confirmed I'm legit, afraid to get banned. UPDATE: I got confirmation from an admin, I can post drum scores but not guitar scores). Final score was 223,900. Thanks to my subscribers! I wouldn't have uploaded this non-gold version if I didn't get feedback about what is "worth watching" about my videos. You've told me it's not all about score, and I'm glad because it's REALLY stressful to me for some reason trying to 100% songs. It's a game and I want it to be fun. I will continue for the best score possible, but my main goal is to play realistically and make a high quality video. Hope you like. Thanks for watching! p.s. So there ya go, my first RB drum video. People thought I'd kill at this once I got my mod working with it. But 100%'ing songs is not in my play book. Just too hard. Props to IBite and Azurite for being able to do that. But I promise to always go for 99%'d Gold Stars! You're not going to see me topping any leaderboards, though. Sorry. Hopefully there's still something of value in me making Rock Band drum videos. If not, I'll only film the really hard ones. Notice the quiet sections and how light I can hit those pads. THAT's why I wanted this mod working. Reliable, soft, resilient, quiet, responsive drum pads. Thanks for watching! RANT TIME... So, this was the first time I actually tried to play a RB song on drums "well" (as close to 100% as I could, using overdrive, etc). I found that it's really annoying when the drum fill sections show up. I have a pretty big lag and it's painful to play free form fills and hear what I just played 125ms (an eternity!) later. Screws up the timing. So my drum fills are always fast rolls early in the fill section, then I stop so I can hear the song again, to time the last cymbal and activate overdrive. And even still, I have to ignore what that sounds like because it's all late and out of time. I hate it. Great idea, the drum fill sections, but even on a non-mod'd setup, there's lag, and it sounds awful. Maybe once I get used to it, and can ignore it better, I'll try to play more interesting fills in future videos. FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? I've finally got my mod working with Rock Band! I had been waiting for OBsIV's XIM2 to come out before I did this, but I missed the original shipment of them and they're currently sold out. Plus it wasn't quite right for my Rock Band purposes, like XIM1 was for my Guitar Hero MIDI input mod. So I decided to have a go at my first microprocessor programming project and try to implement the RB mod myself. A couple weeks later... it works! This video shows off the mod. There's an overview of how it works, and a demo of me playing the guitar, bass and drum parts using it. I love Portal, and this song cracks me up. I was going to sing too, but I decided... nahhhh. Since the RB guitar and drum controllers are compatible with RB2, I'll probably be getting it and you can expect RB2 videos in the future. Also, GH:WT guitar-on-drums videos, since GH:WT will support the RB guitar. For their drums, I'll just have to try their MIDI port, rather than hack them. I've made MIDI Hero available for download to anyone that wants to attempt this mod. Details on my website. That "popup" at the end was just a clip that came with my editing software. I threw it in there to be funny. FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? A: Everything is explained in detail here: http://egyokeo.com/midihero Q: How do you do 3-note chords? A: All "two adjacent note" power chords are mapped to the top 4 pads, so with two sticks I can play any 3-note chord except GYO. But I can get that with one stick in left hand and two fingers on right hand. Q: How do you do whammy and star power? A: I use a bass drum pedal on my right foot to activate star power, and a hi-hat pedal on my left foot to control whammy depth. Q: How do you hold notes? A: My MIDI Hero software has an auto-hold feature for every note hit because it's more natural for a drummer to play that way. It's not a good feeling to mash sticks into drum pads to hold notes. Q: Which video editor do you use? A: My earlier videos were made with Windows Movie Maker. My latest videos are made Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8. Q: How much does this cost? A: The drumKat is a pro-quality MIDI drum pad set. These days, they run about $1k but I bought my set years ago. I also use a PC to run my custom home-brew MIDI Hero software to interpret the drum events. Then the "XIM" and "XFPS" add another $100+. This is not made for the masses. This is a one-of-a-kind setup. Q: Do you play real drums? Are you in a band? A: Yes, I've been playing drums since 1986. I have been in various bands from Jazz to Ska over the years. I just recorded this footage minutes ago. You are seeing the very first moments of my MIDI Hero mod working with Rock Band. Finally! Tomorrow night I plan to get the same thing working but with the drum controller. You can now expect Rock Band videos from me in the near future... playing Guitar parts and finally DRUMS. . This was by request. With a little more practice I could FC it, but as you see near the end, even on easy parts, a slight mis-aim on the drum pads screws up the combo. I just played this like 6x in a row, and always missing the end of the solo (didn't practice the sticking enough to master that) and always messing up another easy part. This take had the best streak, but not the best score. FC'ing songs is just too stressful! I sped it up at the end so I could fit it into 10 minutes. (I know now that I can go up to just under 11mins, or I can be a "director" to exceed that limit, thanks!) Not my favorite song, but out of all the Metallica Death Magnetic tracks, this was the top request! So, I hope you like it. Thanks for watching! FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? Q: Why do the notes "hit" so late? A: I use a 145ms setting for the in-game HDTV Lag Calibration feature to counter the "controller lag" I have with my setup. I use it to make the sweet spot of the notes match the sound of the music, not when the notes cross the row of circles. That way, I play what I hear, but the notes burst into flames really late. This only applies to my GH2 videos and pre-update GH3 videos. Q: Which video editor do you use? A: My earlier videos were made with Windows Movie Maker. I know a lot of people are getting this achievement now with this song. It's All Nightmare Long from the Metallica Death Magnetic DLC. By far, the easiest song to reach 750k on. I mean, people are sight-reading 800k+ on it! So, I wanted to finally EARN my "Now That's Impressive" achievement by getting it without using star power. :-) As always, thanks for watching! (For Verse 1A my sticking is mostly a right-hand-led double stroke roll, but with one diddle thrown in so that I could start leading with my left hand to make certain pad transitions easier. The pad transitions are O Y R G B R G, with sticking RRLLRR LLRRLL RLRR LLRRLL RRLLRR LLRR LLRRLLRR... On Verse 2A I screwed it up and just tried to go straight right-handed double stroke and you can see I lose the multiplier because that made going from green to blue difficult because of the sticks having to cross.) This is my all time favorite Steve Vai song. Has been since the early '90s. Probably one of my favorite songs, period. So cool that it was a DLC for GH3. This is my current top score on it. I missed some easy stuff, but honestly, even the whole "easy" intro before the solo is hard for me. This was the first take where I actually FC'd everything up to Solo A. The note spacing is so literal, and since I can't ho/po anything, it's tough to nail the timing just right with drum sticks. The solos in this song are hell without hammer-ons and pull-offs. Try playing this song by strumming every note and you'll feel my pain. Sorry for my awful whammy sound. It's because I'm using my foot and my mod doesn't allow for "smooth" whammy events, so it sounds really choppy. It's been a while since my last video! I think my next one is going to be from the Dragonforce DLC. But that'll take me another week or two to practice up on before it's video-worthy. I was thinking of UStream'ing my practice sessions, but last time I did that on Jordan, I think people were bored, so maybe I won't do that and save a decent performance for a YouTube video. Thanks for watching!! Hope you like it. FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? A: Everything is explained in detail here: http://egyokeo.com/midihero Q: How do you do 3-note chords?
